I have been on the look out & searching for these owls for 9 years. I found one in late December 2018 but he was up high nestled into the trunk of the tree with his back to me & tons of little branches in front of him so I didn't take a photo as 1. It was impossible & 2. I didn't want to disturb this tiny little angel.
Last weekend I found 5 of these darlings...talk about 2019 starting of incredibly lucky!
Saw-whet owls are one of the smallest owl species in North America. They can be found in dense thickets or conifers, often at eye level, although they can be found around 20 feet up.
They are only 7 inches tall!!!! When roosting they look to be the size of a medium size lemon. Look at those eyes, I am IN LOVE.
