Description
This photo was taken in January 2018 & I simply must share the story with you.
If you look at a couple posts before this one "Intruders beware"
https://fineartamerica.com/featured/intruders-beware-heather-king.html
You will see this northern hawk owl looking rather normal, perched.
It's a good thing I waited there for over an hour as what I didn't realize is he had frozen prey inside those feathers.
I photographed him all cute & normal looking, then out came his talon with frozen prey in it. I could not believe my eyes.
He was using holding his pray against his belly and had his feathers on top of it. It was minus 30 degrees outside and he was using his own body heat to defrost his breakfast!!!! Some days I watched him do this and it literally took him 3 entire hours to defrost and consume his prey.
On days where hunting is good, this hawk owl catches many rodents (voles, mice, critters) and uses the trees (cavities, crevices, nooks and crannies) as his pantry.
I knew this owl was a day time hunter, but I never expected to see him hunt so much, cache so much, and so much more.
The months of November & December were awful as I couldn't go out and owl, and I couldn't really use my hands. The mystery illness of my hands is still happening & incredibly painful.
The plus side is ALL year I have spent visiting this marvelous owl, 65% of the time I spend with him is alone. Best owl experience of my life!!
