Description
This is a 3-6 month old juvenile female snowy owl that I was fortunate enough to photograph at a bird of prey raptor/rehab facility last year.
Photographed at the CRC (Canadian Raptor Conservancy)
I was debating whether or not to post this photo. If you ever see an owl doing this in the wild it means they are scared, they view you, another animal, etc as a threat & this is their defense mechanism. They also clack/clap their beak when severely stressed. In my almost decade of photographing owls, I have only ever seen an owlet pose like this & display other distress signs ONCE in the wild.
In this photo this owl was NOT stressed out. She was still learning how to fly, so she sort of hopped, skipped & jumped and used her wings a lot. Here, she used her wings and hopped up on this fallen tree which is why her wings are out (for balance) and just the luck of the draw she was looking directly at me.
Because she is a teaching owl, she is human imprinted. Just wanted to clarify & educate.
An owl who is human imprinted & handled by a trained falconer is not afraid of humans where as wild ones are for the most part.
