Waiting 4-5 years for these great gray owls to head our way for a single winter is the longest game of patience I have ever known. They fly south from the Northern Boreal Forests when their lemming population is low.
Out of ALL of the owls I have ever photographed, the great gray owl is the most fearless. One can literally walk 8 feet in front of it and it simply doesn't care. They are fearless and incredibly beautiful. In this capture we were watching her perching and hunting, in this shot thank God my finger was on the shutter button as when she took off she flew over my head, I actually ducked.
