This is a northern hawk owl. The come from the northern boreal forests. while perched they appear to be the size of a large apple or medium grapefruit. They hunt in the day. When they fly, they are as fast as a speeding bullet, definitely the most challenging owl of all to capture in flight. These little beauties usually fly south ending up near my area every winter, but only every 4-5 years.
