Description
For the last few months I have been silently observing, photographing & videotaping this beautiful & rare Northern Hawk Owl.
This photo was taken in January 2018 and I will explain the brilliance of what is going on.
Northern Hawk Owls come from the northern boreal forests. They (alone with the great gray owls) are the most fearless of humans, simply because there are no humans where they come from. This owl is a day time hunter, very curious and tolerant of people.
What this little darling is doing here is retrieving his cache. A cache is prey he caught at an earlier date when food was available in which he stores it in tree cavities and crevices for a later date when food may be scarce or weather too inclement for effective hunting.
Here he has his talons hooked into the tree bark, his tail as his stability brace & his wings for balance. I was and still am in sheer and utter awe of this amazing tiny buy mighty predator.
