Please copy and paste the link above to see baby fall out of nest & become a little warrior.
In almost a decade of watching & photographing owls in the wild, this is the very first time I seen the barred owlet leave the nest in real time. Usually early am the next morning I find the owlet on the ground or in a near by tree. This time in the video we seen baby make an attempt to fledge wanting to climb up the tree, but as you can see he wasn't successful. The amazing thing is I captured this all on video. It was such a deeply profound privilege to be the only 2 people in the forest watching this owlet's first moments grounded literally on the earth watching him/her take in this beautiful world with their innocent beautiful marble eyes. You will also see this darling climb trees with his beak and talons.
(If it were only the shot I would have been after, I could have completely disregarded my respect and love for the owls and trampled into that forest to get a better angle on his first moments on the ground & climbing trees, but when you love nature you must maintain moral high ground, tread lightly & keep your distance.) Mother nature knows best.
I'm hoping with all my heart this video will educate people just because you don't see the parents doesn't mean they aren't there. They camouflage very well & believe me they most definitely can see you. I have seen owlets on the ground many times climb trees with their beaks and talons (it's their natural instinct) some are better than others. It is never wise to bring it upon yourself to just take the baby owlet into your home if you think the parents are gone. First thing you should do while looking for mom or dad is to place a call to a local wildlife rehabilitation center as they can direct you what to do & what not to do. Sometimes they will send someone experienced to help you locate the parents.
I have visited too many rehab places & seen too many youtube videos where well meaning people take the owl in, sometimes even keeping this wild owl for a pet. What people don't understand is once that owl becomes habituated to a human, it's life as an owl in the wild is over. This is never good for the owl, thus call the professionals or someone who knows about owls before even interacting with a baby owl or any owl for that matter.
Lets keep educating one another while keeping these beautiful feathered Gods & Goddesses safe ♥
